Portland Community College is committed to creating educational opportunities for students that have been in the foster care system. Each year, over 600 youth in Oregon age out of foster care. National research shows that only about half of youth in care complete high school by their 18th birthday. Additionally, 84% of foster students want to go to college but only 20% actually attend, and among them less than 3% will go on to get a four-year degree. Foster youth that are over 18 years old are more likely to experience homelessness, prison, and difficulty holding a job as an adult. However, these statistics do not mean that these students aren’t courageous, intellectual, and capable of hard work. Rather, these challenges stem from their life circumstances and lack of a supportive background.
Portland Community College has created the Fostering Success Program, which supplies educational advocacy and opportunities to support the transition into PCC and adulthood. Fostering Success helps students access many different resources at PCC such as academic advising, counseling, career planning, and tutoring. Program staff are also there to help students find any additional support they may need. Students can be assured that the program understands their challenges.
