I’m running in the 2017 Boston Marathon on behalf of the Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program, which seeks to prevent summer learning loss and close the extracurricular opportunity gap between low-income students and their higher-income peers.

Freedom to explore the outdoors was one of the most important parts of my childhood, and certainly a large part of what shaped me into the person I am today. I am honored to be given the opportunity to support Hale in their mission to offer educational and recreational opportunities that develop self-confidence, inspire a passion for learning, and encourage an appreciation for the natural environment. Please join me in spreading the word and supporting this wonderful cause.

Team Hale’s athletes will run in the 121st Boston Marathon on April 17, 2017. Their fundraising efforts support the Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program. As a major need-based Summer Learning Opportunity available to Boston Public Schools students, HOLA seeks to prevent summer learning loss, encourage academic gains, and develop social-emotional skills during the summer months so students are ready to begin the next grade in the fall. The achievement gap between low-income students and their higher-income peers is explained by unequal access to learning opportunities beyond the school day, and the well-documented “summer learning slide” most adversely affects low-income students. These problems are compounded by a lack of physical activity, which is directly linked to body weight and brain health. Time actively spent outdoors leads to mental stimulation, has numerous health benefits, and is paramount for development. Join us in supporting HOLA’s work and help Boston’s youth lead active, healthy lifestyles.
