I am Brian Hacker and this is my story:
1,560 miles...That is the distance from Matthews, NC, to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. That is a world away for anyone who hasn't visited that region. Have I? No. What I do know is that in that world there is extreme illiteracy, poverty and lack of medical facilities for the indigenous people. Mayan Families (www.mayanfamilies.org/) is a nonprofit organization in the highlands of Guatemala that is there to Educate, Feed, Shelter and Heal.
1,560 miles...That is the distance I will run from January 1 through December 31, 2015 to create awareness for the work that Mayan Families does. I will run to raise a minimum of $5,000 to send impoverished, indigenous Guatemalan children to school and raise funds for Mayan Families General Education Fund. The cost to send a child to school in Guatemala is $360 per year.
1,560 miles through training runs and weekend races. I will update weekly with run totals. When I have a race I will write a recap and share a picture and possibly a video.
1,560 miles…Running this far may seem like a strange way to fundraise. I began running in May of 2014 after watching my daughter complete a 5K club run. It was disappointing to see her be able to accomplish that and I couldn't even run to the end of the block and back. I started running the next day. Slowly at first. In 2014, I ran approximately 250 miles. Seven months later I now run to get in shape, maintain weight loss and to get the “crazy” out. I know the children in Guatemala go through incredible obstacles to maintain daily activities. If I could help in any way, that is what I decided to do. Running is something I am moderately good at, so I am pushing my body to extremes to help those children. The math works out to needing to run approximately 1,310 more miles in 2015.
1,560 miles…Why am I doing this? My wife, Merrill, adopted her daughter from Guatemala and brought her home to Matthews in 2004. What awaited her future in Guatemala? We don’t know. Fast forward to 2012. I became a part of this beautiful mother-daughter relationship. During this time my awareness of Guatemala and the challenges it faces has grown. If there is one thing I can do, I can try to help as many children through this fundraising opportunity.
1,560 miles…How can you help? Donate however you like. One lump sum. Per mile I run. Monthly. Any amount will help Mayan Families do its important work.
