We are calling on the good people of Edinburgh and further afield to help us raise at least £10,000 to try to win Tom Gilzean’s Oor Wullie sculpture (AKA Oor Tom) at auction and keep it on the streets of the capital - a legacy to a local legend and a truly exceptional man.
Tom Gilzean is a distinguished and recognisable figure on Edinburgh’s Princes Street. Now 99 years old, he has been collecting tirelessly for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (which supports Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children) for over 23 years and his dedication is beyond compare.
Come wind, rain or shine, he has been found fundraising for the affectionately known ‘Sick Kids’ in his signature tartan trews, bow tie and adorned with his service medals. Ill health has not stopped this incredible man from his mission, and he has raised over £1 million over the years for his chosen charities.
As a token of appreciation, Tom was gifted his own Oor Wullie sculpture as part of Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail this summer – a public art event celebrating Scotland’s most famous wee lad while raising vital funds for Scotland’s children’s hospitals. Tom could be found collecting next to his sculpture for many weeks during the Trail.
Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail concluded at the start of September. The Edinburgh Wulllies will be on display at Oor Wullie’s BIG Farewell Weekend taking place 13 – 15 September in Edinburgh’s St Andrews Square, before being auctioned to the highest bidder at Prestonfield House on 19 September. Funds raised will benefit Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC). After this, the Wullies will go to their new homes across Scotland and beyond.
But there is one Oor Wullie that needs to stay here in Edinburgh. Tom Gilzean’s Oor Wullie belongs on the city's streets where it can be loved and cherished for many years to come.
Please help us raise as much as we can to keep Tom’s incredible sculpture in the capital. The more donations we get, the more chance we have of being able to make the highest bid at auction.
We are asking you to do two things: 1) Give what you can, and 2) Please share. We have until 5pm Thursday 19 September.*
Oor Tom, Your Tom, A’Body’s Tom.
Thank you in advance for your ongoing support of Tom and ECHC.
(*The average selling price of a sculpture is £6,000 and there may be some fierce competition for Tom Gilzean’s sculpture. Should we be unsuccessful at the Auction, all donations received through this page will be gifted to Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity to benefit children and families.)
