WE ARE WALKING 5000KM FOR MQ: TRANSFORMING MENTAL HEALTH
Hi we are Joel & Joe and we have decided to set out on an adventure of a lifetime. On April the 1st we are setting out to do a thru-hike across the USA. We will walk 3000 miles from Mexico to Canada along THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL. In total we will traverse five states, twenty-one wilderness areas and three national parks including Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain and Glacier.
The trail roughly follows the spine of the Rocky Mountains providing access to some of the most scenic, remote, raw and wild places left on our planet. This will be a physical and mental challenge unlike anything else and WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
MQ aims to fund multi-disciplinary research into mental health across the spectrum of biological, psychological and social sciences.
Your donation will help uncover breakthrough findings and illuminate our understanding of mental health - transforming lives.
Mental illness affects us all. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental disorder at some point in our lives. The medical, social and economic costs of mental illness are huge. We need research that will give us better diagnostic, treatment and prevention tools to address this problem.
We are paying for all of our equipment, flights and living expenses for the next 6 months with all the money donated going directly to MQ.
For further information about MQ please follow this link: https://www.mqmentalhealth.org/
As the walk spans over 3100 miles or roughly 5000km we thought we would try and raise £5000. £5000 for 5000km!
Only about two hundred people a year attempt to hike the entire trail, taking about six months to complete it. We are going to attempt to do it in 5 months. That is an average of 20 miles per day... EVERYDAY!
JOEL: Currently I am studying a PhD at the University of Leicester. I decided I wanted to take time out of my studies and do this thru-hike because it has always been a fantasy of mine to be a modern day pioneer and conquer nature. With nowhere left on Earth undiscovered and the world being so busy, I feel that this expedition will help me detach myself from the rat race and negative aspects of modern day life. I have spent a long time in education and I feel to grow as a person physically, mentally and emotionally I need to step back and appreciate the world for what it is. JOE: I am a 23 year old Leicester University physical geography graduate from London. I am about to take a break from my working life to fulfil one of my dreams and go on an adventure unlike anything else! The opportunity to walk one of Earth's most rugged and remote hiking trails directly ties in with a deep adoration I have always had for our planet's most wild places. I am excited for the challenge of seeing how I will be pushed both mentally and physically and then finding out what I can learn about myself in the process. Getting some fresh air away from London in a place as enchanting as the American Wild West is also a bonus. #YOLO
