My name is Mac and I am 10 years old.
About a year ago I came home from the St John Youth Program wanting to do something to raise money for St John. I decided I wanted to do a cycle tour and get friends and family to sponsor me.
So after a lot of thought I decided I wanted to ride from the top to the bottom of New Zealand. Mum and Dad quickly squashed that idea, a 10 year old on State Highway 1 didn't excite either of them.
So Dad gave me the Kennett Brothers book "Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails" to pick out a few rides I could do.
In the back of the book was the "Ultimate Ride" a tour that linked many of the cycle trails into one long tour. I worked out that from Cape Reinga to Wellington was approximately 1300 km, which I thought was a big enough adventure, worthy of some sponsorship.
Mum and Dad agreed to it on the basis that I proved to them and myself that I could handle those sorts of kilometres.
Since then I have had a lot of time on my bike and have proved to Mum and Dad I can handle this ride.
Mac is one motivated and determined young man. Mac is no stranger to long rides and cycle touring, has has been doing long multi-day rides since he was 7 years old. Mac loves his bike.
The plan is to leave Cape Reinga on March 6 and finish on the steps of Parliament on March 29th.
The ride is completely self supported so we will be carrying all our own gear, tent, clothing and food etc.
We will be staying in DOC campgrounds and other campsites as we move down throughout the North Island.
Thank you for reading his story, we greatly appreciate any support you are able to give.
