My Story

How old are you?
49

What do you do?
I work as a freelance writer and am currently editing a book on children and food ethics.

My work as an animal rights activist revolves around the Starfish Bobby Calf Project which I founded three years ago. Starfish rescues bobby calves and rehomes them with permanent caregivers for life. I have also rescued or re-homed ex-battery chickens, ducklings, cats and dogs. As part of my activism, I have published op-eds with the Herald, Sunday Star Times, The Dominion Post, Stuff and Scoop.

Recently I completed my PhD on ideologies of nature and environmental education. My theses explored many of the complexities of human/nonhuman relationships across time and place. I worked at the University of Waikato for eleven years as a lecturer in environmental education.

What's your hobby?
I am a distance runner and enjoy competing in running events. I also like growing herbs, cottage plants and vegetables and have an interest in sustainable food production.

What's something interesting about yourself?
My life is not particularly interesting, It is a very ordinary struggle for existence and meaning. There is nothing very interesting that has not been told before, or will not be lived again. The patterns of our human struggles are repetitive, like a worn-out piece of lino. We may rip them up and replace them with new materials, but they will be walked all over and thrown out again.

If I had to say something interesting about myself, it would be that I have a deep appreciation for nonhuman animals and nature. For me, extraordinary is to be found in lost places that are so common that they have been long forgotten. The lacy intricacies an insect’s wings, the gentle breath of the lungs of life, the swirls of an estuary teeming with life, glinting sun, and a trail of cows beneath the moon – these are the interesting parts of my life.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
I have two grown steers and two rising one year old ex bobby calves who I love being with. They love carrots, sweet chestnuts, apples, cuddles and playing. I can call them to me and they come running to get scratches under their chin and around their ears. They also give me big cow kisses. I enjoy wild natural spaces and spending time in solitude or with nonhuman animals.
