According to Focus Ireland, the root cause of the homeless crisis in Ireland is the broken housing system and the lack of public housing to meet the needs of society.
Their research shows that the provision of affordable public housing must form a key part of any country’s housing system because it acts as a safety net for families and individuals pushed out of the private rental market due to the high cost of renting or the lack of availability.
There were 9,891 people homeless in the week of July 23rd-29th 2018 across Ireland. This figure includes adults and children. The number of families becoming homeless has increased by 24% since July 2017. More than one in three people in emergency accommodation is a child.
For the month of October, Highlife is committed to raising awareness and money for Focus Ireland by getting out on the street to clock up a million meters (swimming, running, waking cycling).
