On Monday, 5 August 2019, I will be setting off on a bike from Byron Bay to Noosa for my first ever charity cycling challenge. And I'm sharing this 550km challenge with my eldest son, Declan, and 10 other riders as part of the 2019 GIANT Ride 4 KIDS.
This ride honors the memory of Dalton, my son.
The KIDS Foundation holds a charity bike ride each year in honor of Dalton and Declan and I have watched from the sidelines while volunteers raise funds and awareness of the KIDS Foundation; a not-for-profit charity that educates and empowers children to prevent and recover from injuries and trauma.
I’m doing this to honour Dalton and support the work of the KIDS Foundation. KIDS holds annual camps for children living with and recovering from injuries and trauma including car accidents, fire, domestic violence and dog attacks. These camps provide children and their families with peer-to-peer support, professional support and experiences with others who have been through similar circumstances.
Here’s a bit about Dalton. In the 2010, we were returning home from a camping weekend when our car was hit unexpectedly by a surge of water, carrying the car into the river, sadly Dalton drowned. Dalton was a special kid with 80% burns after a terrible accident at a young age. His courage, smile and “can do” attitude inspired a lot of people.
The KIDS Foundation was a big part of our lives when Dalton was young - he enjoyed many camps and trips to Ironman, where KIDS was a major charity partner, and stayed on to cheer the last athlete home.
We’re not bike riders and are therefore pretty nervous about this challenge. We are training and hopefully will be ready to ride in August. We really can’t think of a better way to honour Dalton’s memory.
We’re trying to raise funds for KIDS through this page, if you can assist us to reach our family goal of $2500, we’d really appreciate it. For around $500 a child can attend a KIDS camp at no cost to them, so please dig deep and support us!
