Pedal for Parkinson’s rides again!
In March 2017 we are hitting the road for a worthy cause of raising much needed funds for the Shake it Up Foundation and their research into Parkinson’s disease.
2015’s Pedal for Parkinson’s MTB Endurance event helped raise $8000 for ShakeItUp, this time around we will trek from Melbourne to Sydney over 11 days raising money along the way to further assists the research to help find a cure!
In 2011, our Co-founder of Pedal For Parkinson’s Vaughan Prout was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of just 33. With a young family at his side, he wasn’t ready to become passive to the Parkinson’s. Instead his thoughts turned to “what can I do to help others in the same situation”. Vaughan soon met many other sufferers of all ages from across Australia through the Shake it up foundation and began planning the charity bike rides as a way to help the best way he knew how.
Vaughan recently shared some personal thoughts on his process of dealing with Parkinson’s on a daily basis and finding a cure: “To say the Parkinson’s diagnosis was a shock to the system is such an understatement, but still a relief at the same time". If you see or feel something wrong with your body, go to the local GP and have a check up. " I’m glad I did!" " Now knowing of my condition it helps me get on with life, family, work and of course riding" There are some great treatments available, "life can still be great".
Life is like riding a bike. To keep your balance you must keep moving. - Albert Einstein
You can join Vaughan and the Pedal For Parkinson’s family on the 2017 ride from Melbourne to Sydney to help raise much needed funds and awareness for the ShakeItUp Australia Foundation.
Departing from Federation Square in Melbourne the route takes our fundraising riders to Eastern Victoria through towns such as Leongatha, Woodside Beach, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Mallacoota and onto the beautiful East-Coast of New South Wales passing through Merimbula, Batemans Bay, Kiama before reaching our destination of Sydney on World Parkinson’s Day the 11th of April. Setting off on the 31st of March 2017, the journey will take 11 days in total including 2 rest days.
It sure is a long way but don’t worry we won’t be setting any KOM’s on Strava. We encourage those who join either for one or a few stages or even the whole trip that you can set your own pace, after all we’re riding for a great cause, not to set world records.
The Shakeitup Foundation put 100% of your donations towards current and new research/trials to help find a cure. www.shakeitup.org
