My Story

I was first made aware of this cycling challenge around Sri Lanka to raise awareness of Depression and Suicide when I attended a charity event hosted by the CCCline 1333 foundation some months ago. What an amazing cause.
I derive a lot of personal satisfaction in pushing myself beyond my comfort zone physically and mentally and aspire to be a “traveler” rather than a “tourist”. This challenge affords me the luxury of combining all these elements. I look forward to absorbing this experience one kilometer at a time and take in all that is beautiful, authentic and dynamic about Sri Lanka and re-ignite fond memories of my childhood spent on this beautiful island.

While I am acutely aware that the 1333KMs, of pedal power will test my resolve, I will be aided by the fact that each push of the pedal will assist in bringing about an awareness of Depression that supersedes, race, ethnicity, borders and religion. I am humbled by the enormity of the task at hand in bringing about this awareness, yet inspired to be part of a team that are simply getting on with doing something about it.

I look forward to sweating it out and being a part of an experience that I will savor for the rest of my life.

Blob

Currently there are around 11 people who die by suicide everyday in Sri Lanka. For every suicide, there are ten others who fail in their attempts. 1333 Bikeathon "Out of the Shadows" is a bike ride for 1333km's around Sri Lanka over 13 days to raise awareness and funds towards CCCline 1333, a free Telephone Counselling service operated by CCC Foundation in Sri Lanka. The ultimate aim of CCCline 1333 is to prevent suicides in Sri Lanka by encouraging people to call its toll free 1333 phone number.

Apart from the main Bikeathon in Sri Lanka, there will also be a mini Bikeathon events in Melbourne and Brisbane on the 7th September.

The Melbourne ride will consist of a 10km loop in Jells Park and a 133.3km road ride through the Dandenong mountains, Pakenham and back to Jells Park. For more information on the rides and how you can register, visit www.1333bikeathon.org or call Jetha on +61438007930.

Sponsoring a rider, whether they are riding in Sri Lanka or Australia, will contribute towards making a difference to prevent suicides in Sri Lanka. Donations made in Australia and Sri Lanka are tax deductible.
