My Story

The 1333 BIKEATHON is a personal goal to support the vital services of CCCline 1333. My wish is to let everyone in Sri Lanka know about the 1333 toll free number and encourage people to seek assistance if they are going through crisis, or simply need someone to talk to. I will be going all the way to complete the challenging but enjoyable 1333KM's around the beautiful Island, where I grew up.

If you would please sponsor just $1 for each KM I ride, it will give hope for so many waiting to step 'Out of the Shadows'.

Everyone at one time or another needs a helping hand and a compassionate ear. I also had a turn when my life seemed far from normal. What is normal? Is it a state that exist in the absence of joy and sadness or does it include both? Through my journey I have come to realize that normal is about understanding that both joy and sadness exist and being OK with it.

However there was nothing normal when I was diagnosed with OCD over 15 years ago. At the time I was thinking "What the heck is this?" Driven to achieve on one hand and riddled with anxiety and depression on the other, how could I juggle these two extremes and put on a happy and brave face to people around me? Well that's exactly what I did, what else could I do. Someone who is seen to be strong and driven, cant possibly be afraid and withdrawn.

My silent journey through anxiety and depression was painful, frustrating, embarrassing, exhausting and the rest. It was a lonely road. Medication to take off the edge and a personal struggle to figure it out.

One hope I had within me, which gave me much internal worth and satisfaction, was my unexplainable drive, resilience and passion to help people in need.

My road to recovery began when I purchased a fridge magnet about "COURAGE" in a news agency in Melbourne. It gave me strength when those uncontrollable compulsions overpowered me with anxiety and sadness. I then discovered my favourite word "COMPASSION". I call it COMunityPASSION. Its empathy followed by action. Being driven by achievement, the action part was easy for me once there was empathy. I however knew nothing is sustainable without "COMMITMENT", which become the third pillar in my life and my journey "Out of the Shadows".

Years later my personal journey through anxiety and depression gave birth to Courage, Compassion, Commitment (CCC) Foundation in 2003 following a visit to the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama, Sri Lanka. Today CCC Foundation has built and operate the largest cancer transit home in Sri Lanka with 186 bed capacity (CCChouse).

An underlying passion through my experience with mental illness was to do something in the mental health space in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka having one of the highest suicide rates in the world saw CCC Foundation start CCCline 1333 in Dec 2009. Today CCCline 1333 receives around 2500 calls a month from people who are fighting mental illness, social issues or simply want to talk to one of our Telephone Counsellors (trained by Lifeline Australia) about their problems. CCCline 1333 is a free telephone counselling service accessible to all people of Sri Lanka by simply dialing the 1333 toll free number.

So now you know my story and how important Courage, Compassion and Commitment is to me and all those we serve, I would like you to please consider sponsoring my 1333KM journey. Your sponsorship will help to keep the phone lines open for those who need to talk to CCCline 1333 about their problems. Thank You.

With Compassion.
