Today, there are more than 770 million illiterate people in the world and over 300 million children who are not enrolled in school. Ninety-eight percent of these children live in Asia or sub-Saharan Africa. Room to Read is working hard to change this.
Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children's literature, constructing schools, and providing education to girls. The organization seeks to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries and future generations.
When you educate a girl, everything changes. For girls in Asia and Africa, finishing secondary school leads to smaller, healthier families, lower HIV infection rates, and higher wages. And as an added bonus, educated women are more likely to educate their own children–ending the cycle of illiteracy in one generation.
I hope you will join Atlassian in supporting Cambodian girls education for 2013 and 2014 for $75K.
This campaign is led by the Atlassian Foundation, based in Sydney, Australia. All proceeds for this campaign goes to Room To Read Cambodian girls education fund.
