In 2008, the US writer Dave Eggers gave a TED Talk about a workshop he started in San Francisco, where passionate readers, writers and volunteers banded together, turned a shopfront into a pirate store, while making the back end a free-for-all writing centre for local kids. Since then, similar grassroots writing centres for young people have popped up around the world.
Sydney's is Sydney Story Factory, known to outsiders as the Martin Embassy. I'm one of dozens of volunteers who help Catherine Keenan—Australia's Local Hero for 2016—and the Sydney Story Factory Team teach hundreds of kids writing exercises that improves communication, builds confidence and demonstrates the importance of their own stories. Many kids are Indigenous, a lot speak English as a second language, and all of them have the best ideas. We need your help in getting them out there.
So please help me support Sydney Story Factory by hitting the 'Give Now' button. Even $5 is awesome. In return, I promise I'll write Series 2 of SBS's 'The Family Law' in record time, ready for 2017.
