Since commencing in 2018, the Junior Indigenous Marine and Environmental Cadet Program (JIME) has been offering students industry related employment while still at Secondary School. JIME covers all student costs related to industry placements, as well as work clothing. Students get to know employers and employers gain the benefit of motivated Indigenous students enhancing their businesses. This program is providing a positive change for participating Indigenous students and their communities.
To be eligible for the program, students are required to maintain their school attendance rate at 90% (which can be compared to the Tiwi College rate of 72.5% in 2017 and Cairns State High School rate of 87% in 2017). JIME currently has 30 students participating in the programs in the Tiwi Islands and Cairns.
Barry.Nilsson. has made a commitment to JIME to raise funds with a view to helping JIME expand their impact by increasing the availability of the program at a national level.
